Review and Test Drive: 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback SE – The Green Car Driver –
The current electrically assisted power steering is a significant improvement over past systems and communicates a decent amount of road feel back to the driver.
We found the Corolla to be a rather pleasant daily driver, be it running about town or taking a longer drive on a busy highway. We liked the firm ride, which belied its less-than-sporty origins.
Finally, we appreciated the long list of driver-assistance and safety equipment, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection that works in the daytime as well as at night, daytime cyclist detection (!), and an excellent lane-departure warning system with steering assist that gently nudges the car back into the lane. Other driver-assistance features include an excellent adaptive radar cruise control and automatic high beams. Oddly, a blind-spot warning system is optional.
BOTTOM LINE
The Toyota Corolla Hatchback combines a sporty look, an interior with high aspirations, and decent fuel economy for its class. With a price around $20,000, it’s an excellent value as well.
