First Look: BMW 640d xDrive Coupe – The Diesel Driver – The Joy of Diesel Driving

PERFORMANCE AND FUEL ECONOMY

When it comes to performance and fuel economy, the BMW 640d xDrive seems to set the benchmark within its model segment. The diesel powered Coupe needs 5.2 seconds from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) while it uses only 5.8 l/100 km (40 mpg) in the EU test cycle according to BMW. The CO2 emissions are 153g per kilometer.

The EfficientDynamics technology package, which includes Brake Energy Regeneration, the Auto Start-Stop function and Active Air Flap Control is largely responsible for these figures. In addition, the standard-fitted Driving Experience control allows the driver to choose among different driving modes, Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport and Sport +, which adjusts the accelerator progression, engine response and the shift dynamics of the automatic transmission. For example, the Eco Pro mode adjusts engine management, shift characteristics as well as the climate control system and the seat and exterior mirror heating to ensure extremely efficient driving.

The BMW 640d can be equipped with a variety of additional options, including safety features such as the Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Adaptive LED Headlights and the Lane Change and Lane Departure Warning System. In case of an emergency, the Advanced Emergency Call, which is part of the BMW ConnectedDrive package, will automatically reporti the position of the car and the severity of the accident.

The BMW 6 Series has the latest infotainment options as well, including BMW Apps, a feature that allows the driver to connect his iPhone to the car and access apps such as Facebook and Twitter from the car’s iDrive system.

The 6 Series is produced at the BMW Werk in Dingolfing, Bavaria. Currently there are no plans to bring the 640d xDrive Coupe and Convertible – or any 6 series diesel for that matter – to the U.S.

Coming up: The Diesel Driver will drive a 640d xDrive Coupe from Munich to Leipzig, a distance of more than 950 km (590 miles). We’ll take a look at performance, comfort and the real life fuel economy of the BMW 640d xDrive and see how close we can get to the 40 mpg (5.8 l /100 km) rating.
