2014 Mercedes-Benz E250 BlueTec – 6 Month Review and Report – The Green Car Driver –
In the E250, the 2.1-liter turbodiesel, mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission, develops 195 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque with EPA fuel economy ratings of 42 mpg (5.6 l/100 km) on the highway and 27 (8.7) in the city, fuel consumption figures that place it at the high end of its category.
The torque peaks from 1,600 to 1,800 rpm, a narrower range than the E350’s 400 pound feet, available between 1,600 and 2,400 rpm.
DRIVING THE 2014 MERCEDES-BENZ E250 BLUETEC
Our 2011 E350 BlueTec moved from zero to sixty in 6.6 seconds and delivered fuel economy of 22 mpg (10.7 l/100 km) city and 33 (7.1) highway. Our 2014 E250 reaches sixty in 8.2 seconds (the 4Matic four-wheel drive system slows it down, it would otherwise be 7.9) but handily beats the E350 on the fuel economy front.
On its first big road trip, a 268-mile (431-kilometer) drive from New York City to Maine, we saw 36.8 mpg (6.4 l/100 km). We would have achieved slightly better figures on the way back had it not been for errant pieces of lumber that destroyed tires on multiple cars including ours.
While the fuel economy is quite good, our real world driving doesn’t place it any higher than what we got with the E350 from New York to Boston, which was 35 mpg (6.57 l/100 km) and the E350 was much more fun to drive in terms of acceleration.
Overall, over 3,500 miles (5,637 kilometers) of mostly in-town driving, the E250 has gotten 28.7 mpg (8.2 l/100 km), exceeding its EPA city rating as well as our average figures for the E350 handily.
