2014 BMW 116d Five-Door Hatchback – Road Test and Review – The Green Car Driver –
Seats are typical of BMW, supporting and comfortable with good quality cloth. The driver’s seat is manually adjustable. Nonetheless, I still prefer the sport seats over the standard as they provide a better side support. Seat heating is available for both the driver and passenger seats.
DRIVING THE BMW 116D
The BMW 116d isn’t one of the sportiest car the BMW Group has to offer. With that in mind, I ventured onto the Autobahn with the 116d.
During the first kilometers on the Autobahn I felt that the car was heavy and unresponsive while in the Comfort or Eco Pro mode. However, using the Fahrerlebnisschalter, or Driving Experience Control, to switch into the sport driving mode immediately provided a more responsive feel.
The Driving Experience Control allows the driver to choose among three driving modes: Eco Pro, Comfort and Sport. Every mode adjusts the settings of the car, such as the accelerator progression and the engine response.
After three days in Düsseldorf traffic as well as in the surrounding area, the onboard computer reported a fuel economy of 39.2 mpg (6.7 l/100 km). The figure falls far short of the claimed 58 mpg (4.1 l/100 km) but can be explained largely by my lead-footed driving as well as the German Autobahn’s lack of a speed limit. In addition, the car already had more than 13,700 miles (22,000 km) on the clock.
