The Road to Philadelphia – the BMW 535d’s Final Journey and Review – The Diesel Driver – The Joy of Diesel Driving
Ben Franklin Bridge
The 116-mile (186-kilometer) drive from New York to Philadelphia took, with traffic, two hours 53 minutes at an average speed of 41.3 mph (66 km/h). Fuel economy was 33.6 mpg (7.0 l/100 km).
The following day, the 118-mile (190 kilometer) return drive in Sunday traffic took even longer – three hours 15 minutes (my best time to Philly is one hour 55 minutes) – at an average speed of 37 mph (63 km/h). Fuel economy was slightly better at 34 mpg (6.9 l/100 km).
BOTTOM LINE
Everyone at The Diesel Driver who had the opportunity to drive the 535d found it an amazing ambassador for both the BMW brand and perhaps the ultimate expression of Freude am Fahren (the Joy of Driving, BMW’s longtime tagline).
While our driving style didn’t always allow us to hit or exceed the car’s 38-mpg (6.2 l/100 km) EPA rating, it was nonetheless quite miserly on the highway and its massive 413 pound-feet of torque were only a tap of the accelerator pedal away.
