New York City Plans Curbside EV Charging Stations – The Green Car Driver –

New York City is planning to offer thousands of curbside public charging stations for electric vehicles and is currently rolling out a pilot program to test the concept.

PlugNYC, the program being operated as a partnership between the city, Con Edison, and Flo, an operator of EV charging infrastructure.

The city will install 34 stations for a total of 100 connectors across the five boroughs, as well as four stations with 20 connectors for the city’s own EV fleet.

A single PlugNYC charging station will have two Level 2 chargers, which supply 240 volts of electricity to a vehicle and can dramatically decrease charging times over Level 1 chargers.

Parking spots directly next to the chargers will be reserved for charging purposes only.  The cost to charge an EV will be $1 per hour from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and $2.50 per hour at other times.  Drivers can pay using a dedicated app or via a website.

Many parts of New York City are EV-charging deserts, where there are few if any chargers that are conveniently located, except for some apartment buildings where they are for residents only.

An earlier version of this article stated that the $1 per hour fee would be in effect from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m..  That fee will be in effect from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m..  The error has since been corrected.
