BMW unveils i3, i8, 640d, 525d, 118d, and 3 EfficientDynamics Edition models at Frankfurt Show – The Diesel Driver
THE 640D, 525D, 118D – AND 3 EFFICIENTDYNAMICS EDITION MODELS
Three EfficientDynamics Edition models were announced in Frankfurt. The BMW X1 sDrive20d EDE and the BMW 520d EDE are celebrating their world premiere in Frankfurt. The BMW 116d EDE will complete the 1-series model range at a later date. With a fuel consumption of 4.5 l/100 km (52 mpg) the BMW 520d EDE sets a new benchmark in the premium business segment while the performance is equal to the original BMW 520d (135 kW / 184 hp). All EDE models are equipped with the standard EfficientDynamics options including Auto Start/Stop and brake energy regeneration. To increase fuel efficiency, every EDE model gets additional options such as an improved transmission, drivetrain and the centrifugal force pendulum that ensures improved comfort at low engine speeds by compensating rotational irregularities to reduce harsh vibrations.
Another world premiere, the complete redesigned BMW 1 Series made its debut in Frankfurt. The completely new 1er sports a fresh new design and new petrol and diesel engines. The BMW 118d is currently the most efficient model available in the range with a fuel consumption of only 4.5 l/100km (52 mpg). The four-cylinder diesel power unit delivers a maximum power output of 105 kW / 143 hp and can go from 0 – 100 km/h (0 – 62 mph) in 8.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 212 km/h while it only emits 118g CO2 per km.
Two new diesel models are being added to the BMW 5 Series and BMW 6,namely the 525d and the 640d. The new version of the automaker’s venerable 3-liter diesel engine, which will also power the BMW 535d, will soon be available in the 6 Series. The BMW 640d features a modified multi-stage turbocharging system using Variable Twin Turbos and Common Rail direct injection. With a power output of 230 kW / 313 hp and a maximum torque of 630 Nm (465 pound-feet) available between 1.500 and 2.500 rpm, the BMW 640d Coupé accelerates from 0 – 100 km/h (0 – 62 mph) in under 5.5 seconds (5.6 seconds for the BMW 640d Convertible).Fuel consumption is 5.5 l/100 km (47 mpg).
The BMW 525d sedan and sport wagon will benefit from a new four-cylinder diesel engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The new engine produces 160 kW / 218 hp and 450 Nm (332 pound-feet) of torque. With an average fuel consumption of 5.4/l100 km (47 mpg) for the sedan (automatic), the new diesel engine consumes up to 20% less fuel than its predecessor.
The BMW 530d gets an updated version of the inline 6-cylinder diesel engine with 190 kW / 258 hp and has now a maximum torque of 560 Nm (413 pound-feet) available between 1.500 and 3.000 rpm. Average fuel consumption is 5.5 l/100 km (47 mpg) for the BMW 530d Sedan (automatic) which means 13% less fuel consumption compared to the prior model. The BMW 535d receives the same engine as the BMW 640d (although it does not get the 40d designation) and has similar performance figures (5.5 l/100 km or 47 mpg and 5.5 seconds from 0 – 100 km/h).
